Ricky Hatton is poised to set up a joint venture with Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions.

Under the terms of the deal, The Hitman’s Punch Promotions will effectively become the 'European branch' of Golden Boy, with the onus on nurturing promising young British fighters.

“These are exciting times. We’re setting up a stand-alone company which will be a joint enterprise, and we’ll look to sign the best of British talent,” Hatton’s lawyer, Gareth Williams, told Telegraph Sport.

”We’ve already spoken to several of the British fighters who went to the Olympic Games, and we’ll reveal names once we’ve sat down and signed things properly.

“Some of the biggest fights in the world are being brokered by Golden Boy at the moment, and with their company wishing to have a European branch, we see ourselves as a ‘good fit’ with them. We’re looking at the highest level of boxing promotion possible.”

Hatton has long stated his desire to move into promoting when he decides to hang up his gloves.

Setanta readers' comment of the day

“While all big teams (Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool) were busy protecting their best players, Arsenal was in forefront encouraging injury prone Walcott to participate in that useless freindly. Arsenal has a very thin squad and I remember Walcott said it but Wenger didn't take action to add some players. Arsenal players are not made of steel and Wenger should be prepared for such situation. We need Arsenal supporters on the board of Arsenal who can feel the way we feel when the team is losing and they can force Wenger to buy some experience players. Current board members are only interested in profits yet they (profits) don't go into history of the club”
