Gomez: I want Arthur rematch
by Ciaran Baynes, 03 October 2008
Michael Gomez has set his sights on a rematch with Alex Arthur, telling the Scot to fight the only man to knock him "spark out".
In the most famous victory of his career, coming in as a big underdog Gomez stopped Arthur in the fifth round to claim the British super featherweight title in the consensus choice for 2003 British fight of the year..
Gomez came close to trumping this in June when he had Amir Khan on the floor and in trouble from a body shot before being stopped himself in the fifth round.
The Irish Mancunian got back to winning ways stopping Chris Brophy in the second round last month and now wants to meet Arthur, who lost his WBO super featherweight title to Nicky Cook in his last outing.

"I would love that fight," Gomez told Setanta Sports News. "I was the one who won that fight and I've been the one shouting out for a rematch since then.
"He's kept avoiding me. I've spoke to him since. I'd love to come to Edinburgh or even better Glasgow. It would be great to have it there or even Newcastle, halfway between Manchester and Scotland.
"He said when he fought Nicky Cook it should be a trilogy, but there's no excitement there, they're both good fighters but with Michael Gomez-Alex Arthur it was a war.
"I'll take him on now, not a problem. I'm always confident. That's Michael Gomez. I've got Alex Arthur's number. I nearly had Amir Khan's number but obviously his speed got to me.
"I'm getting old but I still believe I would beat Alex Arthur because my passion inside me will not let me lose."
Gomez then sent a message directly to his former and, he hopes, future foe.
"Come beat the only man who knocked you spark out," Gomez added. "He was in hospital last time I fought him.
"Let's fight again and give the public what they want."
