FedEx Cup movers and shakers

Scottish rookie Martin Laird needs another big result to avoid Fed Ex Cup elimination at the Deutsche Bank Championship which starts on Friday.

Laird moved to 67th in the FedEx Cup points table following his seventh-place at The Barclays to book a spot at TPC Boston, and his next target is to stay in the top 70 and lockdown a place for the third play-off event at the BMW Championship.

Retief Goosen [82] and Rich Beem [87] are among the big names who need to break into the top 70 or face elimination at the halfway stage.

At the very top of the proceedings, Vijay Singh’s second win from four starts at The Barclays took him to No. 1 spot, while the joint runner-up Sergio Garcia moves into second.

Kevin Sutherland lept from 57th place to third with his joint-second in New Jersey, and namesake Kevin Streelman, the onetime leader at The Barclays, rose to 37th from 102nd in the race for the FedEx Cup.

Setanta readers' comment of the day

“While all big teams (Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool) were busy protecting their best players, Arsenal was in forefront encouraging injury prone Walcott to participate in that useless freindly. Arsenal has a very thin squad and I remember Walcott said it but Wenger didn't take action to add some players. Arsenal players are not made of steel and Wenger should be prepared for such situation. We need Arsenal supporters on the board of Arsenal who can feel the way we feel when the team is losing and they can force Wenger to buy some experience players. Current board members are only interested in profits yet they (profits) don't go into history of the club”
