Gay falls in 200m Olympics trials
by Nick Royle, 05 July 2008
World champion Tyson Gay will not participate in the 200m at the Olympics in Beijing, after falling in the US 200m trial in Eugene, Oregon.
Gay grabbed at his left hamstring and fell to the track after just 12 strides and 40metres in, and had to be helped from the track.
Gay had won the trials for the 100 metres last Sunday in a wind-assisted time of 9.68 seconds, the fastest time ever run, but will not be able now to go for an Olympics sprint double.
Gay, who won gold in the 100m and 200m World Championships in Japan last year, is a victim of the Americans' selection policy of only picking the three fastest in the trials.
The US also lost 37-year-old 1996 Olympic 110-metres hurdles champion Allen Johnson to a season-ending tendon injury during the trial.
