Williams lauds new trainer

Danny Williams told setantasports.com that new trainer Dave Pereira is the man to take him through his two tough tests coming up in as many months against unbeaten German banger Konstantin Airich and British title challenger John McDermott.

Pereira has just received his trainer's license and his first fight in Williams' corner when he faces Airich (9-0, 8 KOs) in Bilbao on May 30 - a bout that was initially set to be on the aborted Matt Skelton-Sinan Samil Sam bill in Istanbul.

Then the Brixton Bomber will face off against McDermott in Dagenham on July 14 and he and his trainer are confident fans will see the best of him.

"Training's been going excellent," Williams told setantasports.com. "David Pereira is an excellent trainer.

"The last two years I've been doing my own thing, training myself, doing my pwn thing. It's been good enough for me to beat [Oleg] Platov, I was battering him all over the place and he was a top German prospect, one of the top prospects in the world.

"It was time for me to take that next step and that's why I've got David and things are going very well.

"I was speaking to Spencer Fearon and he was saying, 'this David Fereira is excellent, he's got so much knowledge'. I was also speaking to Anthony Smalls and he said the same thing.

"So I thought I'd try him out and he was even better than they said."

As for Williams' new trainer, he insists that his job is a case of bringing out the best in his charge, not teaching him anything knew.

"First thing, not add nothing, just get the best of him," Pereira said. "Danny's a bundle of talent. He always has been, it's just a case of getting him to execute it now.

"We're going to get serious on the pads, getting him to do everything he should be doing, everything he can do and to be honest with you if he does do that he can go as far as he wants to go.

"Danny's bad habits - he knows what they are, but he needs me or someone on him to get rid of them, tell him: 'What you walking around for'."

Setanta readers' comment of the day

“I'd be astounded if Arsene Wenger has any interest in signing Martins because he simply isn't the technical standard of footballer you'd expect of Arsenal. Other than pace, he has no real quality, he's a poor man's Tony Yeboah who is dreadfully inconsistent and makes Adebayor look like Kaka. I can just picture thousands of Geordies on their knees, praying that this story is true. Andy”
