Penn: Sherk will wish he was a boxer
by Ben Blackmore, 28 April 2008
BJ Penn has warned Sean Sherk he will have nowhere to run when the pair go head-to-head for the UFC lightweight title at “UFC 84: ILL WILL”.
Trash talk is an accepted part of the fight business, but things have gone way beyond trash talk for Penn and Sherk – who have both vowed to end each other’s careers.
Sherk brought a bad name to the sport of UFC when he was stripped of his lightweight belt back in July 2007, having tested positive for drugs.
Penn claimed the vacant crown by destroying Joe Stevenson, and now he plans to do the same to a man that he detests for endangering MMA.
“He’s been broken before, and he’s been broken bad by Georges St-Pierre. He got broken so bad that he moved down to the 155-pound division,” mocked Penn.
“Sean Sherk is telling everybody ‘I can take BJ Penn down, what’s he gonna do on his back?’
“The real question is: What’s Sean Sherk gonna do when he’s on HIS back? When I’m sat on him, and I’m elbowing his face and punching his face.
“His only hope is that he can take me into the later rounds and get me tired, but this is The UFC.
“This isn’t boxing and Floyd Mayweather where you can run the whole fight, where you ask people to pay $60 and then run away the whole fight.
“This is The UFC so we’ll come out to fight.
“As an experienced fighter I shouldn’t say I want to take him out in the first round…but I want to take him out in the first round.
“I want to beat him by beat down, not by one punch but by beat down.”
