Toon takeover 'approach' confirmed

American private equity firm InterMedia Partners have contradicted noises coming out of Newcastle by confirming they were approached about a possible takeover.

Reports first emerged on Friday that Mike Ashley had approached the New York-based company over a £420 million takeover.

Such a sale would represent a £286 million profit for the Magpies’ tycoon, who has a reportedly cool relationship with Kevin Keegan.

Newcastle rubbished any talk of a takeover on Friday, labelling such rumours ‘nonsense’

However, a spokesman for InterMedia Partners confirmed an approach had been made, but there was no interest from the US company.

"InterMedia was approached about a deal, made no offer and has no interest," a spokesman told the BBC.

Who was England's best player?

Setanta readers' comment of the day

“While all big teams (Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool) were busy protecting their best players, Arsenal was in forefront encouraging injury prone Walcott to participate in that useless freindly. Arsenal has a very thin squad and I remember Walcott said it but Wenger didn't take action to add some players. Arsenal players are not made of steel and Wenger should be prepared for such situation. We need Arsenal supporters on the board of Arsenal who can feel the way we feel when the team is losing and they can force Wenger to buy some experience players. Current board members are only interested in profits yet they (profits) don't go into history of the club”
